Winter has begun, and we already have rescued bats that need rehabilitation. We cannot release them back to the wild and must provide a suitable hibernation space till spring. For many years we used seven fridges for hibernation, but this proves insufficient when we care for up to 3,000 bats during the winter. We have therefore started to build a large fridge room with controlled temperature and humidity in our office space (in a basement) in Kharkiv. This facility will allow us to place rescued bats in cages for hibernation and maintain the required conditions.
The photos show several stages of the “cave”, although we still face substantial work. We have spent 2,000 USD and need a similar amount to complete the room.
If you are interested in becoming a Patron or Sponsor of the hibernation room, please contact us at bats.ukraine@gmail.com. We can provide further information, and we can name the “cave” in your honour.
